Delete and re-download fixes it for me. I have to unplug my TV, and plug it back in every few days. Delete and reinstall.

The thing is “Select” doesn’t work for that in the HBO Max app, only with Netflix, Prime Video, etc. HBO Max is hard-coded for “Skip forward”, and that only seems to work when using the actual Apple Remote.
