It is a minor refresh of the second generation model, with upgrades to the processor and video resolution. If you have a very large flat screen TV, the upgrade from 720p to 1080p is essential. The third generation model has little else to
As reported by 9to5Mac, YouTube will soon drop support for the 3rd generation Apple TV and earlier. Customers who wish to continue watching YouTube on those models will need to AirPlay videos from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac. According to the report, the change will only affect models older than the 4th generation Apple TV (commonly known as the
The 3rd-gen Apple TV was sold by Apple until 2015 for as low as $69, which meant it proved pretty popular. The new tvOS Apple TVs start at $149, a hefty price jump.
Key new features for the third-generation Apple TV 4K include the A15 Bionic chip, 4GB of memory, HDR10+ support, a USB-C charging port on the Siri Remote, and a slimmer, lighter, fanless
With this release, Apple did not drop support for any iOS devices, but support for Apple TV (3rd generation) has been dropped following the release due to 32-bit deprecations. Therefore, iOS 9 was supported on the iPhone 4S onwards, iPod Touch (5th generation) onwards, the iPad 2 onwards, and the iPad Mini (1st generation) onwards.
Apple TV (2nd generation) saw its last update in 2014 (v6.2.1), is officially unsupported, but available features may still work. Apple TV (3rd generation) saw its last update in 2022 (v7.9), is officially unsupported, but available features still work. Apple TV (4th generation or later) is supported and regularly updated.
Editor’s note: Apple relased its fourth-generation Apple TV in October 2015, but that doesn’t mean owners of older Apple TV models are out of luck—there are still loads of channels and apps
When Apple introduces a new iPhone they still sell the previous version AND support it by giving iOS updates to the previous generation.
